Xenon Lamp Control Module

On the 2005-06 Saab 9-5, repeated need for replacement of the xenon lamp ECM/AHL may be caused by mis-matching the xenon bulb with the ECM.

The supplier was changed from Osram to Philips. During the supplier change, a design change of the bulb eliminated a coil. This coil was shown to cause a voltage spike to the ECM/AHL during headlamp start up that would damage the ECM.

All xenon bulbs carry the same part number, regardless of supplier. However, the 10-digit serial number on the lower left hand side of the label (fig. 5) of the Philips bulb indicates whether the bulb has a coil or not. The digits in positions 5 through 7 indicate the coil situation.

A Manufacturer

B Number sequence location

Positions 5 through 7 of serial number, Coil/No Coil

139 or 140 Lamp has coil

141 or 142 Lamp has NO COIL

If the vehicle has a failed headlamp ECM/AHL, inspect the bulb serial number. Bulbs with the 139/140 sequence must be replaced with the 141/142. Only the Philips bulb will have this code/serial number.

TIP: The xenon headlamp ECM is the same module as the AHL.
