    81 turbo 8V c900 intercooler mod - cold-air intake ideas?

    Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of collecting parts to add a c900 T16 intercooler (one of the nice all-aluminium Blackstone ones!) to my 81 8V non-APC turbo c900, and just about have everything sorted now except for mounts for the intercooler itself, and a better way to arrange the cold-air intake. I am considering ways to change the air intake to the filter box from the front to the back, sort of like the way the 16V air filter boxes are set up, and perhaps enable the addition of one of the T16 air intake 'snorkel' setups using one of these:

Has anyone done this when adding an intercooler to an 8V c900 which didn't have one to start with?

    Craig.

PS. I've posted this message here also.

Why not add and 9000 IC? better airflow and cooling at the same time!

Well I've pretty much decided that the car will get some sort of front-mount intercooler now as the improvement in performance with grafting a T16 intercooler into place behind the left-hand headlight won't really be that good given the issues that need to be resolved to make it all fit and work properly.

Also I don't like the idea of rotating the 8V air filter box since the plastic moulding has a manufactured 'kink' to fit over the fixed metal part of the mounting bracket and when the plastic filter box is moved around, it'll be damaged when clamped in place again because the fixed metal bracket will not be sitting in the 'kink' of the plastic moulding. That will reduced the filter box's air volume and also put mechanical stress on the plastic which may make it crack over time.

I'll put a T16 style intercooler into my 89 900i non-turbo car this year for sure, but for the 81 turbo I'm looking currently at a volvo 760 type intercooler. I'm hoping to avoid needing to do any hacking to the tow hooks, etc. if possible.

    Craig.
