    9-3 LPT to FPT?

    Hello everyone!

I have recently purchased a 9-3SE 2002, 2.0t 150bhp (that is the 2nd SAAB car in my possesion and I believe all the following ones will be of the same make ). When bying the car I was doing some research on the 9-3 SE and I was under impression that from 2002 the engines on 9-3 where 185 or 205 bhp. However the VIN number decoder says 150bhp and engine type B205E lpt .. Of course, I should have checked the VIN, but since 9-3 SE of these years are so scarce in my country, I had to buy or let the deal slip out of my hands. After some furious searching on the web I came to conclusion, that lpt can be upgraded to fpt, but the information about the process is very difficult to find! I realise, that this might be already covered in topics in Swedish language, but unfortunately I do not speak the language, since I am from Latvia.

Perhaps someone could share an experience in lpt to fpt conversion with me? Thank you in advance!

I don't know anything specific about the 9-3, but a LPT is just software. So the turbo is the same in the lpt as in the fpt, but not the software.
Often you can just order a chip to make the turbo boost harder.

Here is an example, from the tuner Nordic Uhr:
    http://nordictuning.com/main.php?tun...3og&sub_page=4

    They upgrade a 150hp to 205hp for 9375 kr, about 1000 euros.

I hope you understand my english, I had a rubbish teacher.

speedparts has a distributor in Estonia. http://www.saabituuning.com
Your tune would cost ca 600eur. you must send your ecu and they send you new ecu, where hp gain is almost 60hp. not bad. I run on speedparts soft and happy wid it.

Thank you for the responses! Beatone: that's excellent English, what are you talking about!

Would you think that, since only software is different, changing ECU from 150bhp to an ECU from 185bhp would be all that is needed to make FPT from LPT? It sounds plausible, right? Of course, the reprogramming could be much cooler, but I think I could get a ECU from 185bhp much cheaper. For starters, so to speak

Sure, that would be no problem. On the Trionic 7-cars (cars with black DI) the apc-valve is fitted as standard and no hardware needs to be added to your car. To get a 185 ECU into your car you will need help from someone with a TECH-2 tool usually only found at SAAB dealerships. The TECH-2 is needed to "marry" the new ECU into the cars system.
The only difference between your car and a FPT would be the lack of "Turbo" gauge in the main instrument on your car

Thanks, bollman! My 9-3 is Trionic 7 and SAAB dealership is very close by. Now I only need to reascertain, that the ECU is from B205 engine and is the 185bhp version..

I understand, SAAB did fit these engines also on 9-5 models. Some extensive browsing will take place now

You can't use a box from a 9-5 185 hp. This engine will be 2,3t

Hmm. There is a dealer with tons of ECUs who will sell me one for 100GBP, there is just this problem - the ECUs are out of the cars already! So in order to buy the right one I need to know the number..

So far he offers #9198789 (found one on INet - supposedly for 9-5, 2000) and #5380076 (someone in Inet sells it as 9-5, 1999-2001). Now is there a less painful way of finding out an ECU number for E205 with 185BHP??

Aerofred - is this indeed so? In Wiki (not too reliable source, I know) they say that E205 has been used in 9-5 as well. Would it be possible that the same engine is 2.3? On the other hand, I have no clue about power outputs for 9-5, but I have definitely seen 9-5 with 2.0..

Still furiously looking for ECU numbers and explanations!

Ok, I am so eager that this thread turns into a one man show. I hope this will not be considered spamming or flooding

www.elcats.ru show 2 ECU numbers for 9-3 B205 engine in EU/GB market: #5382536 and #5169891 So, one should be 150hp and another 185hp. Is my logic faulty?

    A dilemma.

Yes Saab 9-5 has B205 but it only has 150 hp.
There are a special edition with 190 or 192 hp but it is not so common and I do not know if it works on a 9-3.

Yes, it seems 9-5 is a far fetch.. SAAB dealer did not want to hear anything about swapping ECUs (surprise, surprise!). Luckily there is another semi-official SAAB site nearby.

Can anyone please direct me to ECU part number list or smth similar? It is really quite frustrating to see tons of ECUs in front of you and not to be able to tell them apart

OK, got a nice ElPartsCat2003 from some friends - seems that ECU for 2.0 B205L 185bhp has number #5169891. It also says - different exhaust valves and spark plugs. Well, spark plugs I can handle, but exhaust valves will be very difficult to change..

Here is the question: if BSR, MAPTUN etc offers tuning to 200+bhp without changing the internals of an engine, would ECU change (only 35bhp increase opposed to 60+ BSR, MAPTUN etc) be more or less ok for the same old valves?

Bollman - I would highly value your opinion here

Interesting... I know the Aero 9-5 (B235R) has different valves. I´m not so sure that B205E and B205L has different ones (or B205R for that matter).
But, I would not be too scared about putting a stage 1 into your car.
My former 9-3 had 154hp original and I ran it with over 220hp for 3 full years and _many_ miles without any problems at all (BSR Stage 1, MapTun Stage 3, Nordic Stage 3).
