I would be grateful if anyone of you presently owning and driving a car in the UK could specify the cost of doing so.

That is, what is fixed your cost of just owning a driveable car in the UK?

Tax, insurance, MOT etc.

MOT is required annually on cars 3 years old and over, £40ish.
Petrol is currently hovering around £0.95 per litre.
Road tax disc is required, depends on year of car and emissions, but £170 per year for a 2001 9-5 Aero.
Insurance is the biggest variable you are likely to encounter, based on Car, Value of car, driving record, location, job, your age.
I'm 29, 9-5 Aero £600ish per year.

In Sweden every registered car (aged >36 months) has to do an annual check-up at a cost of 300SEK. This is done at one of The Swedish Vehicle Inspection Company´s departments. Does the same apply in the UK?

The UK MOT is handled by your average garage, goverment run scheme carried out by private garages, there are main 'mot' (VOSA) testing stations, but these are quite spread out.
